Advertising on is handled by Project Wonderful. Project Wonderful uses an “infinite auction” system that allows advertisers to choose exactly where they want their ads to go. To advertise on the Morgan Wick sites, simply choose a site from the list below, click on “Place bid”, and tell us what you want to pay, and when you want to pay it. Project Wonderful checks all the bids every second of every day, and if your bid is the high bid, your ad is displayed. You’re only charged for when your ad is displayed. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why don’t you use Google Adsense? I have a perfectly good Adsense ad.
A: Because I actually want to see some money from my advertising without having to make $100 first, the minimum for Adsense to send out the first check.

Q: Is this service offered by Blogger or Freehostia?
A: Project Wonderful is not affiliated with Blogger or Freehostia.

Q: What do I need to set up an advertisement?
A: All you really need is a Project Wonderful account, which you’ll need to upload funds to to bid with. If you want to create graphical ads, they generally must be 125×125 pixels, a square ad. The exception is Da Blog’s Premier ad, which requires you to create a banner ad, 468×60 pixels. To upload your ad into the system, once your account is set up, click on “my ads”, “create a new ad”, and then follow the directions shown. You can also create a new ad after you’ve clicked the “place bid” button (see below).

Q: How long do I have to wait until money I’ve put in my new Project Wonderful account shows up?
A: Most of the time it should be instantaneous. If you send money by eCheck PW has to wait for the check to clear. Contact Project Wonderful if you believe money that should be in your account already isn’t. Please don’t complain to me, I can’t do anything about it.

Q: What image format should I use?
A: You may use GIF, PNG, and JPG. Animated GIFs are supported. No other file formats are supported.

Q: How does my ad get displayed on Da Blog, Sandsday, or the rest of the site?
A: Click on the footer underneath any ad, the part that reads “Ads by Project Wonderful!” or “Your ad here, right now”, or one of the links above. Click on the “Place bid” button. In the box that appears, select the ad you want to use (or create a new one, see above), then type in the most you’re willing to pay per day. You probably won’t be charged for this full amount (see below). Finally, use the calendar to set a start time and end time. If you want, you can also stipulate a maximum amount you’re willing to pay in case your ad starts costing you a lot more money than you intended.

Q: How much can I bid?
A: Anything. If you bid anything over ten cents, your bid must be in ten-cent increments.

Q: Do I have to get my bids approved?
A: No. I do occasionally check to make sure nothing offensive sneaks onto the ads, but generally I just let everything take their course.

Q: What about click fraud?
A: What click fraud? Your ad is charged only for the time it’s shown, not for how often people click on it.

Q: I’m trying to place a bid and I don’t get the calendar at all.
A: Your bid is only active between the start and end times you set. If you could beat out the high bidder, but the start time of your ad hasn’t come yet or it’s already expired, your ad’s not displayed and you’re not charged. When bidding, consider the maximum amount you want to be charged in full. Multiply the value of your bid by the number of days (plus any fractions) you’re setting for your bid to be displayed; you should be able to pay the result. Alternately, take the most you’re willing to pay in full and divide it by the amount you’re bidding, and you get the number of days to run the ad.

To set the time, click and hold on the hour or minute and drag it left and right to reach the time you desire.

Q: With the amount I want to bid (because I actually want my ad to be displayed), I’d basically have my ad displayed for no time at all. I want my ad to actually be seen, and I know I’ll probably be charged less than my bid times the number of days, but I also want to hedge my bets against paying too much in case bidding is unusually strong.
A: On the Place Bid screen, you can set a maximum you want to spend on your bid. When you reach this limit, your bid is terminated.

Q: So, if I bid $1 per day and set the time for a week, am I charged $1? $7? Something else?
A: It depends. The most you can be charged is $7, $1 for each day of the week, but you probably won’t be charged the full $7. First, you’re charged only if you’re the high bidder. Second, you’re charged only enough to beat out the second-highest bidder. Third, you’re charged only for the time your bid is shown. If your $1 ad is displayed for 2 hours, 24 minutes, you’re only charged one cent (assuming, of course, your bid of $1 has to be charged at a rate of $1).

Q: Wait, I’m being charged even if no one is clicking on my ad and coming to my site!
A: The value of an ad is not just in getting people to click on it. There is also value in people merely seeing it. Even if they don’t click on the ad, you’re building brand awareness in people that may cause them to come to your site or try your product later, when they feel like it.

Q: Wait, I’m being charged for time when no one is looking at my ad!
A: Basic economics, Holmes. The readership is reflected in the going rates for ad space. As readership declines, the going rate goes down, which means the amount you’re charged goes down. Like the stock market, the going rate keeps updating by the second. (Scroll down four questions for one way this works.)

Q: Do I have to beat out the high bid?
A: If you want your ad to be displayed right now, sure, but not necessarily. Ad rates fluctuate over time, so you could conceivably underbid now, and take advantage of a slow period to get advertising at a discount.

Q: What if there’s a tie for the high bid?
A: Whoever was there first wins. If you don’t think that’s fair, hike your own bid.

Q: So where should I advertise?
A: I strongly recommend advertising on the main “” ad, the top link above. However, I also offer other advertisements, which can be used to advertise for specific audiences at a discount rate. Advertising on Sandsday, for example, is useful for reaching the webcomic audience. If you’re a webcomiceer, you can advertise in that space for less than it would cost to advertise on the whole site.

Q: You’re making us do too much work by having to constantly make bids! YOU can set up your ad boxes and forget it, but WE have to keep making bid after bid after bid, and constantly monitor the going rate to make sure our bids win! Can’t you make this easier for US?
A: Yes. You can create a campaign to automate your bidding. Just search for sites and click on the Campaign button below the results. For example, you could search for sites that “have a domain name like morganwick” and set a campaign for that search You can set a start and end date and time, and specify that you only want to bid on certain days of the week or certain times if you wish. Set the maximum amount you’re willing to bid, and if you want, a daily spending target and overall spending target for the whole campaign. You can even set a bidding style and whether some of your ads will be displayed more than others.

Q: How will I know when there’s a bump in traffic somewhere on the site, say because something on the site got Dugg? By the time it’ll really show up on the statistics the height of the opportunity will be gone.
Q: How will I know when new ad spaces I might be interested in are created?
A: You can set up an Ad Alert by searching for sites and clicking on the Ad Alert button below the results. For example, you could search for sites that “have a domain name like morganwick” and set an ad alert for that search.
